Pirates Use Big First Quarter to Outpace Bearcats, Take a Two-Game Lead in Big Thumb - Black

February 07, 2025 /// Harbor Beach, Michigan

For the second time this season, Harbor Beach jumped out early against the Ubly Bearcats and never looked back, defeating their BTC-Black foe, 57-45. Sweeping Ubly this season, Harbor Beach now takes a two-game lead in the Big Thumb Conference’s Black Division standings with three league games remaining.

Benson Harper scored 13 of Harbor Beach’s 17 points to lead at the end of the first quarter, 17-5. His remaining 21 points would come mostly in the fourth quarter, being held scoreless by Ubly in the second and just five points in the third quarter. Altogether, Harper finished the night with 34 points, his second-highest point total this season (35) and third in his career (37). The Franzel brothers would combine for 32 of Ubly’s 45 points, being led by sophomore Collin Franzel’s 19 points.

Ubly would take the momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Harbor Beach 14-9 and forcing six Pirate turnovers. The Franzels would score all 14 points in the quarter for the Bearcats. Harbor Beach would extend the lead back out to 12 points after the third quarter, 39-27. Both teams scored 18 points in the fourth quarter with most of the damage for the Pirates being done at the free throw line, going 6 of 9 in the quarter and 9 for 14 on the night.

Harbor Beach has now beaten the Ubly Bearcats four games in a row, sweeping the series in consecutive years. This comes off the heels when the Bearcats defeated the Pirates six straight times from 2021 through 2023. Ubly’s 45 points on Friday marked the most points allowed by Harbor Beach all season long. The Bearcats fall to 10-7 overall and 7-2 in divisional play, ending a three-game winning streak. The Pirates have now won 10 games in a row and have not lost since January 03, 2025, their only loss this season.
