Lakers Roll, Extend Win Streak to Five Games and Punch Ticket to District Final

February 26, 2025 /// District 95 - MHSAA Tournament /// Pigeon, Michigan

The Elkton Pigeon Bay Port Lakers never trailed and defended their home court to defeat the Bad Axe Hatchets by 19 points, 62-43 on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Lakers now returns to the district championship game for the first time since 2022 to face off with the Harbor Beach Pirates.

After a 2-2 start, Lakers blazed out to a seven-point lead with half of the quarter still to go and set the tone for the remainder of the game. Bad Axe would get as close as three points in the second quarter, but that was as far as the Hatchets would get, with a majority of the second half remaining a double-digit lead for the Lakers. The Green Machine would lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-9 before Bad Axe’s Michael Janssen tried everything he could to keep the Hatchets in the game with three consecutive three-pointers in just 96 seconds, but the Lakers’ Mason Carr would hit a shot of his own from beyond the arc to finish the half to push the lead back to six points just before halftime. Lakers finished the half leading by six points, 30-24.

Luke Good would hit two three-pointers in the third quarter and the team would go on a 9-0 run in less than three minutes to push the lead to double digits. At the end of the quarter, Lakers’ lead was extended out to 11 points, 45-34. In the final quarter, Lakers would go on another 9-0 run including another three-point shot from Good, as well as an impressive two-hand slam from Caden Carriveau.

Carriveau and Lucas Wehner’s inside-play was a major factor in Lakers’ Wednesday night victory. The two co-led the team in scoring with 14 points, followed by Mason Carr with 13 points. Bad Axe’s Janssen finished with 20 points in his final game as a Hatchet. Sophomore Graeme Seltz posted 15 points, including going 5-5 from the free throw line.

Lakers has now won five games in a row, having not lost since February 07 against Reese. The green and white have also defeated Bad Axe two years in a row in the postseason, both by a differential of 19 points. They now advance to the District 95 championship game on Friday in their home gym at 7:00pm against the top-seeded Harbor Beach Pirates. Coverage begins on Friday at 6:10pm on Sports Radio 102.1FM and wlewsports.com with Clark Ramsey and Mark Gainforth.
