Bad Axe uses Second Half Surge to Secure Win

January 17, 2025 /// Pigeon, MI

The Lakers led through nearly the first three quarters, but it was the pesky squad of Bad Axe Hatchets that went home with the victory, 47-45 on Friday, January 17, 2025. With the win, Bad Axe remains tied for first place in the Big Thumb - White division with Millington and drops the Lakers one game back.

The senior Hatchet duo of Michael Janssen and Grady Seltz scored all 20 points for Bad Axe in the third quarter, taking a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, 39-38. They would lead as many as four points with just over two minutes to play, but the Lakers would tie up the game with 1:29 remaining in regulation. With three seconds left and the game tied at 45 a piece, Seltz drove to the basket and was fouled, sinking both free throws to take a lead that would stick, winning on the road over their long-time foe by two points.

Lakers finished the game with 19 turnovers, eight more than Bad Axe, committing at least four in each quarter. The green and white out-rebounded the Hatchets 28-19.

Seltz led all scorers with 20 points, while Lakers were paced by Caden Carriveau with 18 points. The Hatchets had little answer for Carriveau in the first half, but he was limited to just one basket in the third and fourth quarters with the remainder of his points coming from the free throw line. Bad Axe’s Janssen finished with 15 points and the sophomore Laker Lucas Wehner was the only other scorer in double digits with 12 points.
